Elmlea Junior High Visit in January 2006
Occasionally teachers from the Toronto Board of Education ask for an optometrist to volunteer their time to help teach a science unit on the eye to their class. This year Dr. Ng went to Elmlea Junior High to help out. "The time I spend with the kids is fun! I am always amazed at how much the kids already know about vision and the eye before my visit. I usually set up six to eight "fun stations" for the kids to learn about the eye. (Mme Priest: Thanks for the cookies. To the class: Thanks for the collage of "eye jokes" - the poster is in my waiting room).

Dr. Ng does vision screenings for 300 children at Finch Public School in January 2003.
Dr. Ng and a few interns gave vision screenings to all the students at Finch Public School on January.21, 2003. "It was a long but enjoyable day to see so many children in six hours. Every child received a stereo (3D) vision, colour vision, and visual acuity test. All the children who did not pass the screening tests were given notices for their parents to seek a complete visual assessment from their local optometrist. I was surprised at the number of children who did not pass the screening. We found that 30% of the kids needed to be referred for a complete eye exam."

Drs. Ng and Le host Diabetes and your Eyes on behalf of the Ontario Association of Optometrists at the Ontario Science Center during Diabetes Month in November 2002.
During National Diabetes Month (November 2002) there was a diabetes health fair at the Ontario Science Center. Drs. Ng and Le helped host Diabetes and your Eyes on behalf of the Ontario Association of Optometrists during the health fair. Knowing that diabetes is the number one cause of blindness in North America, the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Diabetes Association encourage all diabetics to seek yearly eye exams. The early detection of diabetic retinopathy is essential in aiding to preserve vision.

AOK Vision Correction Therapy and Myopia Control
Accelerated Ortho-K uses reverse geometry contact lenses. Flattening the cornea reduces the focusing power of the eye. If the amount of corneal flattening is accurately controlled, it is possible to bring the eye into correct focus and compensate for myopia (nearsightedness). After the contact lens is removed, the cornea retains its flattened shape for part or all of the remainder of the day. A retainer lens must be used each day to maintain the corneal flattening, or the myopia will revert to the pre-treatment level.
